The Life License Qualification Program (LLQP) is the proficiency requirement for becoming a licensed insurance agent in Canada, allowing you to advise clients on life insurance, or accident and sickness insurance solutions.

And whether the insurance industry is your career pursuit or a step along your financial services career journey, the LLQP is a fast and cost-effective way to get your foot in the industry door. Just being registered into LLQP can help you to land an interview.

Some firms will require you to successfully complete the LLQP before applying, while other firms will make a conditional employment offer if you’re still studying. Some firms will even reimburse the cost of the LLQP enrolment!

Job boards to search for “LLQP” jobs

The LLQP is unique to Canada’s insurance industry, so it’s a great term for searching relevant job postings. Here are some job search platforms to search:

Steps to getting insurance licensed:

1.    Get your CIPR number

2.    Complete the LLQP

3.    Pass the provincial exams

4.    Get sponsored

1. Get your CIPR profile

In order to let the insurance regulators know that you’ve enrolled into, and completed, the LLQP, you’ll need to create a profile with the Canadian Insurance Participant Registry (CIPR). It’s completely free and only takes a few minutes. You’ll be given a unique CIPR Number, which you’ll need when you enrol into the LLQP. (So the LLQP course provider can let the regulators know when you’ve passed the LLQP, so you can book your provincial licensing exams)

2. Complete the LLQP

After choosing your LLQP education provider, the next step is selecting the right LLQP version for you. The three main options are:

LLQP Full Life – Canada (including Quebec) Five modules in total, and allows you to become licensed in every province and territory in Canada, including Quebec.

LLQP Full Life – Common Law (excluding Quebec) Four modules only, and will allow you to become licensed in all provinces and territories, EXCEPT Quebec. (If you choose this option, you can always take the Quebec-module at a later date)

LLQP Accident & Sickness Two modules only, and will allow you to become licensed for Accident and Sickness insurance, but not life insurance.

3. Pass the provincial exams

Once you have successfully completed the LLQP you can then book your provincial licensing exams. This is done with the insurance regulator in your province of residence. Contact information for all insurance regulators across Canada can be found on this link:

4. Get sponsored

After successfully completing the provincial exams, you’re ready to get licensed! The licensing process is managed by the insurance firm (the sponsor). To find your sponsor and get your licence, search “LLQP” in any of the job search platforms below.
